Theresa Doherty Clinic
Article by Barb Weber

I was nervous. I seldom have time to attend these events and this was the maiden voyage for my green mare. I'd registered for the Theresa Doherty clinic, a WDCTA event on July 21st and 22nd at Elkhart Lake Horse Park. Although I am new to dressage clinics, I was immediately welcomed. Penny Dobbs showed me Theresa Doherty Clinic - July 2007to the stall and introduced me to Theresa, who greeted me warmly. Cindy Ruetten and Penny gave me a quick briefing and a bite to eat. Lisa Morris, owner of the facility, beamed her infamous smile. Ann Fredricks, one of the generous auditors, even taped my session for me.

There was a theme to the clinic which developed further with each individual ride. Theresa helped every horse/rider pair at whatever their level, from my inexperienced mare to the upper level masters. It was insightful to observe what other horses were able to so with a similar instruction. My passion is starting horses, and it was my objective to learn effective ways to ride in early stages of training.

I learned invaluable keys to riding young horses which build the foundation for upper level work. Theresa taught me about sending a horse onto the outside rein with the inside leg, emphasizing subtle aids and releasing them promptly, not hanging on them. When I got home, I tried the lessons on my more experienced horses and PRESTO! - success right off the bat! For me, this confirmed the quality of the instruction.

To top it off, Cindy sent a photo from the clinic and a hand-written note afterwards. Whether you are a seasoned equestrian or a newcomer to the dressage discipline, I highly recommend future clinics sponsored by this group. By the end of the July clinic, we were already eagerly anticipating what we'll work on when Theresa returns in October. See you there!
